I´ll be spending the next few weeks here in Huancayo, and it´s a pretty amazing place. So let´s start with a bit about the place. It was founded by the "wankas" - should I just stop there? Anyway, the city is a grid patterned mass of houses and shops, looking a little dusty but totally surrounded by enormous mountains, including a daz-white glacier. My most interesting experience today was the market, with cages and cages of guinea pigs piled up (the guinea pigs literally piled up in the cages), endless rows selling bits of cow, sheep, duck, rabbit etc. One of the coolest bits is a massive row of little tiny bars, where you can ask them to mix up juices and cocktails from the piles of fruit stacked up on the counter. That is, if you can locate the serving person behind the stacks of fruit!
My guide today was the director of the organisation I´m going to be working with, and everyone has been extremely helpful and friendly. Most impressively, they can cope with my Spanish. Of particular help is the completely insane dog "Negra" who lives on the roof of "my" house and goes wild when I go to the terrace.
As it´s already the weekend (I haven´t done any work yet of course) various people from the organisation are going on a trip to the jungle tomorrow... so I´ll just be popping down to the Amazon rainforest...
